Weight And Overage

Windsor dumpster weight limits and what overage costs

The tonnage included with every size, the rate charged past it, and the fill line that decides whether a bin can legally leave the driveway at all.

  • 1 to 3 tonnes included
  • $120 a tonne over
  • Scale ticket every time

The Allowance

Every bin size carries a tonnage that rises with size

A 6 yard includes about a tonne, a 10 or 14 yard about a tonne and a half, a 15 or 20 yard two tonnes, and a 30 or 40 yard three. Past whatever your bin carries, the rate is $120 a tonne, billed off the scale ticket rather than estimated.

The allowance is a disposal cost passed through, not a penalty. The transfer station weighs the truck in and out, and the difference is your load. You get that ticket with the invoice, so the arithmetic is checkable rather than a number we assert.

What pushes a bin over is nearly always material rather than volume. A load with concrete, soil, plaster, tile or wet material through it weighs several times what furniture does. Heavy debris rules covers the fix, and bin sizes lists the tonnage per size.

Staying Under

Four ways to keep a bin inside its weight allowance

  1. Separate the fill

Concrete, brick and soil in their own small bin at the inert rate.

  2. Keep it dry

Water adds real weight. Tarp the bin if heavy rain is forecast.

  3. Size down on heavy

A small bin twice costs less than one big bin well over its tonnage.

  4. Level with the rail

Overfilling is not a weight problem, it stops the load being hauled at all.

The Fill Line

The fill line is a legal limit, not a guideline

A load has to be tarped before it can be driven, and a bin heaped above the top rail cannot be tarped. So an overfilled bin is not charged extra, it is simply not collected, and the truck has made the trip for nothing.

That is when a trip charge appears, and it is the one fee people find hardest to accept because nothing was actually taken away. Levelling the load before collection day avoids it entirely.

The practical version: nothing protruding above the top edge anywhere along the bin, and heavy material spread across the floor rather than mounded in the middle. Avoiding extra fees covers the trip charge and the others, and delivery and pickup what else has to be clear.

Straight Answers

Windsor weight limit questions

About a tonne on a 6 yard, one and a half on a 10 or 14, two on a 15 or 20, and three on a 30 or 40. Every quote states the figure for your bin.
$120 a tonne, billed off the transfer station scale ticket, which comes attached to your invoice so you can check it.
Almost always because of heavy material mixed through it: concrete, tile, plaster, soil or anything that has been rained on.
It cannot be collected. The load has to be tarped to be driven, and a heaped bin cannot be tarped, so the truck leaves and a trip charge applies.
The allowance is set by the size, but you can take a smaller bin at the fill rate for heavy material, which is nearly always cheaper than paying overage.

Explained the tonnage before I booked and sent the scale ticket after. No mystery at either end.

Told me to take a small bin for the stone rather than the big one. Saved a fortune in overage.

They warned me to tarp it before the rain. I did not and it still came in under, but the advice was right.

Went over by a third of a tonne with old tile. Charged exactly the rate quoted, ticket attached.
