The list of things a bin cannot take is short: paint and solvents, fuels and oils, tires, batteries, propane tanks, sealed hot water tanks, electronics, appliances still holding refrigerant and anything with asbestos in it. Everything else is fair game.
The refusals are not arbitrary. Landfills will not accept tires because they trap gas and take decades to break down. A sealed tank can rupture in a compactor. Fluorescent tubes carry mercury. Each one is a rule at the transfer station, not a preference of ours.
The limits that actually cost people money are weight and the fill line. Every bin has a tonnage allowance and a top rail you cannot load past, because a heaped bin cannot be tarped and an untarped load cannot legally be driven. Weight limits and overage has the numbers for each size.

Heavy at the bottom
Spread across the floor of the bin, not stacked in one corner.
Break down the bulk
Flat-pack furniture and cabinets take a third of the space broken up.
Keep fill separate
Concrete, brick and soil in their own bin, at the inert rate.
Stop at the rail
Nothing above the top edge. The driver cannot take a heaped bin.

Level with the top rail and no higher. Anything protruding stops the load being tarped, and an untarped bin cannot be driven, so the truck would leave without it.
It is billed at $120 a tonne off the scale ticket, which comes with your invoice. It is not a penalty, it is the disposal cost passed through.
Mattresses and most appliances are fine. Anything with refrigerant, a fridge, freezer or air conditioner, has to be drained and tagged by someone certified first.
It is pulled at the scale and charged as a separate disposal, usually per item. Worth a look through the list before you load rather than after.
