Where It Goes
Windsor dumpster recycling: where a load actually ends up
What gets sorted out of a bin before landfill, which streams are recycled whole, and why keeping a load clean changes both the destination and the price.
- Sorted at the facility
- Clean loads diverted
- Ticket per load
Three Streams
Three waste streams that never see a landfill
Clean fill goes to an inert facility, where concrete, brick and asphalt are crushed and reused as aggregate. That is the cheapest disposal route there is, and the reason we are insistent about keeping fill loads unmixed.
Clean green waste, branches, hedging, grass and leaves with no soil or rubbish through them, goes for composting. Metal, whether it is racking, appliances or structural steel, goes to a scrap facility where it has actual value.
Everything else is mixed waste, and it is sorted at the transfer station before what is left goes to landfill. Timber, cardboard, drywall and metal are pulled out of a mixed load mechanically, which is why a mixed bin still diverts a good deal. Heavy debris covers the fill stream and yard waste the green one.
Diverting More
Four choices that keep more of a load out of landfill
-
Keep fill separate
Concrete, brick and soil in their own bin get crushed and reused.
-
Keep green clean
Branches and hedging with no soil or bags through them get composted.
-
Pull the metal out
Racking, appliances and steel are worth more at a scrap yard than in a bin.
-
Ask for the ticket
Every load is weighed and ticketed, so the destination is on record.
Honest Limits
What a waste diversion claim can honestly mean
A mixed construction bin is sorted, and a meaningful share of the timber, metal, cardboard and drywall is recovered. What is left, and it is a real share, goes to landfill. Any operator claiming near-total diversion on mixed waste is describing something else.
Where diversion is genuinely near-total is the separated streams. A clean fill load is crushed and reused. A clean green load is composted. A metal load is melted down. Those are the three worth organising a job around.
So the honest version is simple: how much of your load avoids landfill is decided by how you load it, not by who hauls it. What we take shows which stream each material belongs to, and pricing what the separated rates are.

Straight Answers
Windsor recycling and diversion questions
Steel to scrap, the rest to the bin. They set it up that way rather than us asking.
Green waste kept clean so it went for composting. Cheaper and it felt better.
Straight answer about how much of a mixed bin really gets recycled. First honest one I have had.
Good on diversion. The e-waste still needed a separate booking, which they told us upfront.
