Soil weighs about a tonne a cubic yard when damp and sod is heavier again because it holds water. A large bin half filled with turf can be over its allowance before anyone thinks to stop, and the overage costs more than a second small bin would have.
Branches, hedging and brush are the opposite: light and bulky, so those can take a larger bin without trouble. The moment soil, sod or patio stone joins the load, the small bin becomes the cheaper answer.
Clean green waste is composted rather than landfilled, which is a lower rate as well as a better outcome. Yard waste covers the household version and landscaping and excavation the contractor one.

Why a clean green load beats a mixed yard waste bin
Branches, leaves, grass and hedging with nothing else through them go for composting at a lower rate than general waste. That is a genuinely different facility, not a marketing distinction.
Once soil, plastic plant pots, old fence panels or bags of rubbish are mixed in, the whole load becomes mixed waste. It is still taken, it just goes somewhere else and costs more.
On a large garden job that difference is worth two bins. On a small one it rarely is. Patio stone and broken concrete are a third stream again, clean fill rather than green waste. Recycling and diversion explains where each ends up.
